Learn the Shocking Details of the Bloodiest Day in FBI History
Former FBI Agent Ed Mireles was severely wounded, but miraculously was able to stop two cold-blooded killers in a Miami shootout that claimed the lives of two FBI agents and injured five others.
McLean, VA (August 7, 2025) - On April 11, 1986, eight FBI special agents engaged two serial bank robbers in a shootout that is often described as “the bloodiest day in FBI history.” It occurred in a residential area in Miami. In less than five minutes a total of 145 shots were fired. Two FBI agents—Benjamin Grogan and Jerry Dove—were killed; and five FBI agents were seriously wounded. It was Special Agent Edmundo Mireles Jr., who, despite being severely wounded and near death, miraculously found a way to survive and kill the two bank robbers before they could escape. Because the agents were tremendously outgunned by the heavily armed criminals, this incident was the catalyst for the FBI and law enforcement agencies across the country to switch from six-shot revolvers to semi-automatics.
In a recent interview on the “Heroes Behind the Badge” podcast, Ed reveals the shocking disparity in firepower, the split-second decisions that determined life and death, and the moment when he took two devastating hits but refused to give up. "This is survivable," he told himself as bullets flew overhead - a mindset that saved his life.
